Fun Outdoor Back to School Event Ideas

We’re into September - and we know what that means: it’s back to school time. It’s an exciting time of year – especially since we’re educators too. Whether you’re an administrator, a parent, or on the PTA, you have the opportunity to make a splash in your school’s community. 

Here, we have five ideas for outdoor back-to-school events. That way, we’re keeping it both fun and safe for the entire community to enjoy. Scroll on; let’s have some fun!  

1. A Carnival 

A fun fair could be a fun and unique way to welcome back students and families to school. There are so many opportunities to partner with local businesses and invest in your community and the students and their families.  
 

2. An Ice Cream Social 

 
Sweet!  

After a long week at school, invite the students and parents to have an ice cream social on the school grounds. It’s a great way for teachers and parents to meet and chat in a low-stress environment.  

There are a few ways to make this happen at your school - you could provide the ice cream and have teachers scoop, or hire a couple of ice cream trucks for everyone to enjoy and remember. 

Everyone can have fun with a toppings bar with individually packed toppings or small, safe containers.  
 

3. A Welcome Barbecue 

 
Who doesn’t like a good cookout?! A barbecue could be the perfect way to welcome everyone back to school. It’s a great opportunity for socializing and mingling over a nice meal.  

Let’s make your ‘que count! Have teachers, staff, and parents bring their favorite barbeque sauce or sides for a new take on a PTA pot-luck. Having kid-friendly desserts like pies, cookies, or cobbler are a wonderful way to round out the back-to-school BBQ menu.  
 

4. A Back-to-School Breakfast 

Maybe you don’t want to tie up the evenings of your families and staff - so why not consider a back-to-school breakfast for all of your families and kids to enjoy one morning before school.  

Allow for parents to grab and go if they’re on their way to work, and create handouts to introduce them to the staff and faculty of your school.  

 
5. An Outdoor Coffee Bar 

Perfect! What better way to meet people than over a cup of coffee? Everyone loves coffee and especially our healthy gourmet coffee. Don’t worry about over-caffeinating the kids. We also have tea and decaf options for younger students.
