Tricks and Tips to Keep Moving Through the Winter

It can be challenging to find motivation to workout, especially when icy winds seem to slice straight through our bones and the sun sets before we even make it to our cars for the evening commute. Not being as active when it’s cooler out can take a toll on both our physical and mental health. However, this is the time when getting the blood flowing is most crucial for maintaining a positive headspace.

With a bit of creativity and planning, staying active can get you through the colder months ahead. Get inspired by our tricks & tips to keep your body moving. Plus, we share a delicious smoothie recipe sure to give you the energy needed to make it through the season!

Tips to Stay Active & Healthy During Winter

Discover a New Hobby

Unfortunately, water skiing and paddle boarding aren’t the ideal winter sports even with our Endless Summers, however, there are plenty of opportunities to pick up a new active hobby. If you want to feel like winter, there are plenty of ice-skating or roller-skating rinks as well as trails for hiking or biking!

The winter is a great time to pick up new fitness hobbies such as ice skating or indoor rock climbing!

Dress for the Weather

When exercising outside this time of year, layers are key to keeping warm and dry. You can always remove outer layers if you get too warm. For the bottom layer, avoid cotton, instead choose a moisture-wicking material in case you work up a sweat! The top layer should be wind- and water-proof. Use this as an excuse to find a cool new windbreaker!

Once you come back inside, make sure to give your body time to adjust before removing layers. This retains some of your body heat and allows your body to reset and recover.

Stay Hydrated

Just because you may not feel as quenched for thirst, doesn’t mean you should drink less water. It’s equally as important to stay hydrated when active in the winter as in the summer, so make sure to drink water both before and after exercising.

Another great way to stay hydrated is with a creamy and mouth-watering smoothie. We love this simple Almond Delight treat using our FENIX Rich Chocolate Nutritional Shake Mix, full of protein, vitamins, minerals, and Ganoderma mushrooms.

Almond Delight Smoothie

1 scoop of FENIX Rich Chocolate

1 tbsp coconut flakes

1 cup almond milk

1 tbsp almond butter

1 cup of water

Ice (optional)

Blend all of the ingredients, except for the coconut flakes, until it reaches a smoothie texture. Pour in a glass and top with coconut flakes. Delicious and nutritious

Use the Sun’s Rays

While the shorter days make it challenging to get sunshine, with proper planning you can still get your daily dose of Vitamin D.

If your work schedule blocks out all your daylight, try walking to a park on your lunch break! If you plan to exercise at night, wear reflective materials and meet with a friend or family member to stay safe.

If exercising in the dark, stay safe by wearing reflective clothing and bringing along a friend or family member.

Walk Indoors

If you’re really dragging your feet and struggling to find fitness motivation, go walk around an indoor location like a mall or a museum. Bring along some friends or family for a two-in-one workout and social gathering. If everyone enjoys themselves, make it a weekly endeavor so you’ll always have it to look forward to!

If staying at home, a quick search on YouTube will give you thousands of guided workout videos that are effective and entertaining. You are bound to find a new walking workout that will have you hit your wellness goals in no time!

Join Your Local Gym

Your local gym or community center most likely has a wide variety of fitness classes to choose from, such as basketball, yoga, Zumba, and more! You can also try out that new Pilates studio or get your ballet on with a Barre class.

If you’re a little too shy to visit the local gym, you can easily create a great workout area at home with some inexpensive equipment. Extra space in the garage, basement or even living room can function well as a DIY fitness center. To make it even easier, simply spend a few minutes climbing up and down the stairs for an intense and efficient workout at home.
